The buzz of excitement as friends and families joined together in a celebration of multi-culturalism filled the early morning. Slowly, the groups coalesced into their flashes of red, orange, white and green (don’t forget the Irish contingent!) before queuing up to parade to the Sports Centre. This year, as usual, over 60 countries were represented! Inside the Sports Centre, more than 3,000 children, staff and parents settled in for the cultural shows. Each year five to eight countries present a three-minute snapshot of their culture on stage. This year, the cultural shows featured Thailand, India, Malaysia and Spanish speaking countries, the latter got the crowd on their feet to join in a lively performance of the macarena!
Throughout International Day, all students had an opportunity to visit the Food Hall to sample a huge array of delicious foods prepared by parents from different countries. Pizza and pasta were on order at the Italian booth, dumplings and dim sum at the Chinese. The Filipino booth offered amazing adobo rice balls and lumpia rolls, while the Americans went cold turkey with turkey and cranberry sauce and traditional pumpkin pie. The array of food was dizzying but everyone enjoyed traditional favourites and found some new ones. International Day gives everyone the opportunity to learn more about their friends and colleagues. Bangkok Patana School is home to 62 nationalities from around the world, making it the most ‘international’ international school in Thailand.
